AncestorStuff.com has made a few changes...sliding into retirement

 Hello All,

We have not posted in awhile, so here is an update to our site:

www.ancestorstuff.com

Since 1 January 2024 we have removed all newly published books from our website.

We will sell e-books through our partner, RootsPoint.com. Their publications will appear on our site when all has been updated.

We will sell our used and nearly new books.  They will sell for prices  currently posted on our site.  Most are below $5.00.  They are not marked inside (pencil and pen marks) and in very good condition.  Some are like new! These will be available on our site in the near future. So much more will be added in the future.  If you have been looking for a specific book, we might be able to help you find it.

We will sell clothing and accessories, all having genealogy and history themes.  Prices are reasonable.

And, as always, if you have a question about researching your ancestry, please send us a memo. If we cannot answer it, we can refer you to one of the many professional researchers across our nation.

We would like to thank all for the years of support and patronage.  We do appreciate every one of you.

Until our next post, please be safe and kind to each other.

Regards,

AncestorStuff.com

We're BACK

More than a year since we last posted on this blog! Shame on us!

So, what's new? We have apparel and cool stuff just for you to give your friends.  OK, you can buy some for yourself, too.

Still have free shipping on orders over $30 during the second half of each month.....except for May, when we celebrate MOM.  Our offer is valid from May 1 through May 15.

We have many DNA kits to choose from.

We have eliminated Flip Pal and tools.  We just didn't make much money off of it, so out the door it went.

In the near future, we will be offering lower prices on our Used and Clearance items.  There will be an announcement about that soon.

And, so far we have been able to keep ourselves safe and well, ok, there have been a few hiccups in our house, but we are alive.  That is all that counts.  Hoping you are all safe, too.  This will all pass, and we will line up for complete makeovers and fancy dinners.

Clearance and Used Catalog of Books is Overflowing! Help!

Our cup runneth over....with books!

Have you browsed our Clearance and Used  Books category lately?  If not, you are missing some really great bargains.

Here are just a few of the latest additions:

"Rosenberg considers the emergence of Pearl Harbor’s symbolic role within multiple contexts: as a day of infamy that highlighted the need for future U.S. military preparedness, as an attack that opened a "back door" to U.S. involvement in World War II, as an event of national commemoration, and as a central metaphor in American-Japanese relations. She explores the cultural background that contributed to Pearl Harbor’s resurgence in American memory after the fiftieth anniversary of the attack in 1991. In doing so, she discusses the recent “memory boom”."   OUR PRICE: $10.00

"Robert J. Hemming recreates the harrowing drama of the individuals and ships that fought to survive one of the most ferocious and costly maritime storms ever. Drawing on historical records, including firsthand contemporary accounts of survivors, this book weaves a gripping tale of valor and courage."
OUR PRICE: $6.00

"Whittlesey recounts deaths ranging from tragedy to folly—from being caught in a freak avalanche to the goring of a photographer who just got a little too close to a bison. The chilling tome that launched an entire genre of books about the often gruesome but always tragic ways people have died in our national parks, this updated edition of the classic includes calamities in Yellowstone from the past sixteen years, including the infamous grizzly bear attacks in the summer of 2011 as well as a fatal hot springs accident in 2000. "  OUR PRICE: $8.50

South Bend, Indiana: It's More Than Just the Golden Dome

When you think of South Bend, Indiana, of course you think of the large golden dome at the famous Notre Dame University.  But, South Bend is more than the Fighting Irish. It's so much more.

image of Notre Dame University, www.images.google.com

AncestorStuff.com had the chance to tend a table at the St. Joseph County Library in South Bend, Indiana this past weekend.  The South Bend Genealogical Society held it's conference there.

The vendors and the attendees were very nice and we really enjoyed our stay.

We learned so much about the South Bend area, which has a rich history that has it's many historical resources right there at the St. Joseph County Library. http://sjcpl.lib.in.us/

St. Joseph County Public Library, South Bend, Indiana, www.images.google.com

After speaking with the member of the library that was representing this nice facility, I learned about the vast collection of resources available to the public regarding local history and Indiana newspapers. They also house lots of resources for history and genealogy from all over the United States, too.  The library is relatively newer, and the staff is first rate.  Take a look at their on-line catalog of holdings.  Don't hesitate to send a message to the reference staff.  They are very knowledgeable, and can help to break down some family tree walls.

I also spent some free time looking over the several tables used by the South Bend Genealogical Society to display free copies of past publications of their quarterly newsletter.  These dated back to the 1980s, up to present day.

South Bend Genealogical Society logo, www.sbags.org

The society has a rich history, and has been very involved with preserving the history of South Bend and the surrounding area.  The website, http://www.sbags.org/main.htm, has photographs, maps and databases, including lists of links to many resources for your Indiana research and beyond.

The South Bend society also sells some nice books and DVDs.  Take a look at their store http://www.sbags.org/store.htm.  Purchases from their organization help to support the society and it's many projects and on-going programs for the public.

RootsTech 2017 State of the Conference Report

RootsTech 2017  and What I Did, Who I Met, The Fun Had by All, Part 2

Previously I wrote about six of the vendors that I met at the RootsTech Vendor Hall in Salt Lake City this year.  To continue, I will review another six vendors that may interest you. Be sure to click on their link to see everything that they have to offer.

www.Famicity.com, A social network designed to protect, share and continue your family legacy. This program is compatible with the software of Ancestry, Geni, FamilySearch and many more. This program enables you to keep your family information secure and private. Create a timeline of your family story.  Sign in with your Facebook or FamilySearch account.

www.GenealogyWallCharts.com, If you are looking for a source to produce a quality family tree chart, this is it.  They use premium paper.  They have blank tree charts.  They have black and white charts, along with full color charts.  They even have pedigree engraved cutting boards! They can download every photo from your FamilySearch tree.

www.ExtremeGenes.com, They have a national radio show every weekend.  Podcasts are released every Monday.  Get the ExtremeGenes app from your app store so that you can tune in on iTunes, iHeartRadio, Stitcher and TuneIn Radio.  It's Family History Radio.
Honestly, if you like good history stories, this is the place for you.

www.Familytreesandtimelines.com, This company offers custom-made representations of your family history. Visit their website to catch a glimpse of their artistic sample timelines. Photos of your family members are placed on trees done with watercolor, pen and airbrush. Historical timelines list important life events that support the story of the featured person. A customized, biographical history timeline also comes with a pdf file for your use in a family book or other publication.  These samples are beautiful.

Sign up for their Launch List, and get 6  months free membership. Their offices are in Vienna and Berlin.  I think this could be something that is missing in the world of European research.  Exciting!

www.History.utah.gov, The Utah Cemetery & Burials Database has sexton records and information from Utah historical documents.  Click on the tab labeled "Cemeteries and Burials".  On the right side bar choose search for a burial, or a death certificate from 1904 to 1964. in the state of Utah. Add burial information using their Microsoft Excel template.

In a few days, I will review more of the vendors  that I encountered at RootTech 2017.  Perhaps my reviews will encourage more of you to attend the world's largest genealogy party.

The Scotch-Irish of Colonial Pennsylvania, by Wayland F. Dunaway, 1944, 2007 reprint

The best history of the Scotch-Irish of colonial Pennsylvania ever written, Dunaway's classic is indispensable to the genealogist because it outlines the circumstances behind the settlement of Lowland Scots in Ulster, their life in that Province for two or three generations, and the reasons for their emigration to America, further tracing the important migratory movements of the Scotch-Irish from Northern Ireland to Pennsylvania, and from Pennsylvania down the foothills of the Appalachians through the Great Valley of Virginia to the Carolinas and Georgia.

Quicksheet: The Historical Biographer's Guide to Cluster Research (the Fan Principle) by Elizabeth Shown Mills, 2012

Elizabeth Mills introduces us to the concept of “Cluster Research” based on the FAN principle, the idea being that to prove identity, origin, and parentage individuals must be studied in the context of their FAN club--family, associates, and neighbors. Historical information, she says, is like real estate: the true value of any piece of information is unknown until it is put into community context.

The Winthrop Fleet of 1630, by Charles Edward Banks, 1930, 2009 reprint

This is an authoritative list of the 700 passengers who are believed to have come to New England with John Winthrop in 1630. Based on research undertaken in England and America, it provides as much data as could be verified on each passenger--name; place of departure; places of residence in England and America; occupation; church affiliation; dates of birth, marriage, and death; and relationships to other passengers. It also has indexes of names, places, and subjects as well as appendixes listing the passengers on the Mary and John and the Lyon which sailed contemporaneously with the Winthrop Fleet.

Jamestowne Ancestors, 1607-1699, by Virginia Lee Hutcheson Davis, 2006

Jamestowne Ancestors 1607-1699, by noted Virginia genealogist Virginia Lee Hutcheson Davis, reveals the names of the very people who established the colony, first under the auspices of the Virginia Company of London and then under King James I and the later Stuart kings of England.
